How and Why Cultural Groups Tend to See Themselves Essay

How and Why Cultural Groups Tend to See Themselves - Essay ExampleThe approach which is taken allows individuals to get across to hold onto a sense of personal identity. However, by doing this, there is a loss of learning and ability to go out and accept the mechanics of different cultures. The opposition which is created further creates divisions that do not allow others to have the amend perception and insight into creating and integrating solutions and needs within society. Examining the perceptions by Kwame Appiah from Moral Disagreement and Franklin Foers How soccer Explains the World provides further insight into why the boundaries among groups are considered important and the ways in which this develops and changes the cultural groups in an emerging global society. The work of Foer is based on the division between pro soccer and anti soccer Americans. The division is one which works as an analogy in appreciation the difficulties that are created in terms of boundaries and identity between two groups. The boundaries which Foer identifies move further into those who have this identity because it relates to nationality, ethnicity, culture and deeper issues which nurse among those in society. One is able to instantly create a space which they can relate to and tarry safe in while those on the distant are kept as unsafe and should not be associated with the group (Foer, 12). The association which Foer creates to this and the idea of safety that comes from various cultural groups is then questioned by the author. slice there is a sense of protection and safety in this regard, there is also a drop of macrocosm able to work effectively in various areas. Foer creates an analogy to business in which the impost and traditions have to be left aside to complete the end goal. However, this also becomes a threat to other cultural groups that do not recognize this practice, leaving a lack of identity and understanding and make the boundaries to heighten instead (Foer, 140). The analogies which Foer examines in terms of us versus them and the boundaries of culture are further identified by means of Appiahs Moral Disagreement. The theme which is called upon shows that cultural groups have different perceptions of themselves that they do not equate with groups outside of themselves. The cultural groups that are created are defined with the need to carry a similar identity and understanding of where one belongs and the practices they take part in. If one is outside of this group, they may carry a lack of being able to have the same perspective or beliefs. To many, this becomes threatening and causes disruptions in the practices, traditions and beliefs of many. Even more than this, the morality and the actions of groups which do not understand the practices of another can become disrespectful to the other group and the deeply embedded religious, moral or traditional beliefs which are continuously practiced. This particular threat bu ilds even more boundaries among groups and creates a perception of one group holding a sense of ignorance toward another (Appiah, 6). Both of the associations with identity, cultural groups and morality become questionable because of the way in which the world is beginning to change and develop. The move into globalisation is leading into all areas of life beginning to insure boundaries in terms of sports, business, culture and exchanges which are occurring. This happy chance of boundaries is one which is becoming a threat to many, specifically because of the perspective that the other cultures will also break the practices, rituals and beliefs of alternative cultures. These strategies are easy intentioned and management are well aware, from the initial stages itself, about the objectives these strategies would realise. However, emergent strategies are the realised strategies or the result of completed actions. While deliberate strategies are deliberate and planned, emergent strategies may be accidental and may not be unfeignedly planned or deliberated. In real terms, deliberateness is the result of planned, well thought out, formulated, deigned, strategised and conceived strategies, while maturation may be in terms of innovative, accidental, spontaneous, instinctive and intuitive planning. In such cases, strategic planning may not work and it would be necessary to rely on intuition, or instinctive nature of the decision maker. Therefore, it could be said that rigidity and lack of flexibility could be a main criteria in deliberateness that might in effect constringe the gap between what-is and what-ought-to-be. (Eppel). Once strategic plans are drafted and finalised, the options for changes or modifications are minimal. Therefore, it would not be defile to assume that bureaucratic elements are very much present in deliberateness since the laid out systems are to be maintained and followed. Thus a manager becomes restrained and restricted in his functioning, nether the deliberateness strategy, since he has to follow the stipulated guidelines in totality, and flexibility, or innovative thinking may not be possible. However, emergent strategies are highly flexible and accommodating. In the case of any disruption or unhoped threat, the deliberate strategy may be rendered ineffective, or unus able. Ambedkar, untouchables form an entirely new class i.e. the fifth varna apart from the existing four varnas. Thus, untouchables are not even recognized under the caste system of Hindus. However, historically persons born in lowest castes and classes of personsdoing menial jobs, criminals, persons suffering from contagious diseases and tribals living outside the so-called civilized world were considered as unto uchables. Their exclusion from the mainstream society was based on the belief that they are impure and harmful and it was necessary to ostracized them for the overall benefit of the society. Untouchability was in any case practiced as a form of punishment to the law-breakers and criminals they were socially boycotted for their misdeeds.Who Are Dalits?Untouchables are also cognise as depressed classes, harijans etc but today they are more frequently referred to as D alits. In in advance(p) times, Dalit refers to unmatcheds caste rather than class it applies to members of those so-called menial castes which are born with the bulls eye of untouchability because of the extreme impurity and pollution connected with their traditional occupations. The struggle was not only against the foreign rule of Britis h but it was also against the social evils such as untouchability prevailing from centuries. After Independence when great leaders of freedom struggle agreed to make our own Constitution, it was decided that there must be provisions under the Constitution regarding the abolition of social evils and upliftment of down-trodden castes and social groups etc. In view of this documentary oblige 17 was added to the Constitution Article 17 reads as follows Untouchability is abolished and its practice in any form is forbidden. The enforcement of any disability arising out of Untouchability shall be an offensive activity penal in accordance with law. Thus, Article 17 abolishes and forbids untouchability in any form. At the same time, it also makes it an offence punishable as per the law made by the Parliament. In order to fulfill the mandate of Article 17 of the Constitution, the Parliament enacted the Untouchability (Offences) bite, 1955. It made several discriminatioray practices punisha ble as offences, although the punishment provided were rather mild and in their actual application even milder. Several lacunae and loopholes were found in the working of the Untouchability (Offences) Act, 1955 which compelled the Government to bring about a drastic amendment in the Act in 1976.The Act was revamped as the Protection of Civil Rights Act. However, the scourge of untouchability continued and dalits were still being treated in a discriminatory way, their socio-economic conditions remained vulnerable, they are denied a good turn of civil rights and were subjected to various offences, indignities and humiliations. Therefore, to counter theses atrocities meted out to so-called Dalits section of society, the Parliament passed schedule Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Attrocities) Act, 1989.The Act provided more comprehensive and punitive measures to deal with and to prevent discrimination and atrocities againstdalits. The ultimate objective of the Act was to help the social inclusion of Untouchables/Dalits into the mainstream Indian society. These above mentioned Acts were made with good intention and with positive objective of removing discriminatory practices against untouchables/dalits but in actual practice, these Acts have failed to live upto their expectations.Untouchability Present ScenarioIn our society there still exist feeling of superiority of caste and birth. We can experience the practice of untouchability in workaday life around us, especially in rural and semi-urban areas of the country. Also, in big metro cities, the inhuman practice of manual scavenging is still there. According to a news report of Press Trust of India (PTI), on January 3, 2014, four tea shop vendors were arrested by the Police in Karnataka for practicing untouchability while selling tea- they were serving tea in different types of cups to caste Hindus and SC/STs. The incidence shows that the evil practice is so deep rooted in Hindu society that even after 67 years of Independence is continuing in one form or other. However, it can be said that things are slowly changing the mind implant of modern generation is also changing. Todays youth with modern education and globalized outlook are viewing the social order from different perspective of equality and impartiality and not from the religious or traditional point of view. Hopefully, the wicked practice of untouchability would be removed from the society sooner rather than subsequent and our country would usher into a new era of social equality and brotherhood which will be the true India of Gandhi and Ambedkar. What is Untouchability?Indias Constitution abolished untouchability, meaning that the dominant castes could no longer legally force Dalits to perform any polluting occupation. Mig ration and the anonymity of the urban environment have in some cases resulted in up(a) occupational mobility among Dalits, but the majority continue to perform their traditional functions.
